Work-life balance appears more challenging in the UK than in other European countries. We have the highest sickness absence, the longest working hours, the fewest holidays, the highest divorce rate and we commute the furthest. We also consume the most indigestion tablets and tend to feel guilty about relaxation!

Survey updates show that the first years of the millennium have seen a continuation of rising exposure to work-related stress, particularly amongst managers. The measurable cost is an expensive burden but we believe the hidden cost is much higher.

Most employers now acknowledge that it should be addressed, not just as a duty of care requirement but as a matter of sound business. How they choose to tackle it is influenced by the culture of their organisation, but invariably it is managers who take the brunt.
